Baseball at the Colorado School of Mines is in full swing. The Orediggers spent Spring Break with a full schedule.
As many students headed off for vacation, CSM started a four game conference home series on Friday, March 9 at Darden Field against Colorado State University at Pueblo. This series marked the first time these teams have faced each other this season.
The Thunderwolves took the opener 6-3 behind pitcher Justin Crow (2-1) who pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win.
The Oredigger offense was spear-headed by redshirt freshman catcher Anthony Siderius who went 2-5 with two runs and two RBI. Freshman hurler Chris Rogers took the loss, allowing six runs over 7 2/3 innings.
A double-header continuing the series on Saturday, March 10, ending with two more wins for CSU-Pueblo, 6-2 for the opener and 16-4 (5 innings due to rain) in the nightcap. Strong pitching from the Thunderwolves quieted the Oredigger offense in both outings.
The final game looked to favor CSU-Pueblo with an early 4-1 lead. But Mines came back with runs in the third and fourth innings to capture the advantage 5-4. The Thunderwolves soon tied and the game was drawn out into extra innings. A three-run burst by CSU-Pueblo in the top of the 10th went unanswered for a win and a series sweep of CSM.
After three days rest, the Orediggers stayed in town for a non-conference game against Metro State University on March 14.
Six CSM pitchers kept the Roadrunner hitters unproductive while fanning 10 batters and allowing three runs. Lefty Chad Baudendisel (1-0) one-hit Metro in the fourth and fifth innings to take the win.
Meanwhile, the Oredigger offense handed out 15 hits and tallied 9 runs. The top of the lineup was the main force behind the victory with the first four hitters each having three hits to combine for 12-17.
Running up an 8-0 lead into the fourth, CSM walked out of Darden Field with a 9-3 win.
The last weekend of break, Mines headed out to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for another four game series on March 16, finishing up just in time for classes to resume.
